Communities We Serve – St. Matthews, Kentucky

We would like to thank our neighbors in St. Matthews for visiting our website.  If you are looking for a licensed estate planning attorney in the Louisville Metro area, you have found a reliable local resource.

St. Matthews, with a population of more than 15,000, is located in Jefferson County, Kentucky as part of the Louisville Metro area.  St. Matthews is the 20th largest city in Kentucky.  This beautiful city was first settled by European Americans in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War.

The City of St. Matthews draws both homeowners and businesses because of the welcoming environment and the vitality of the city. The parks in St. Matthews are a dynamic part of the community, offering many exciting annual events such as the Community Pride Awards in January, Community Street Festival held in May, Halloween in Brown Park in October and Light-Up St. Matthews in December.

Fountain Point Park Memorial

Fountain Point Park Memorial or simply “The Point,” is located on Lexington Road, in the split of Frankfort Avenue and Lexington Road.  Though not exactly within the city limits, this memorial honors those fallen heroes of the military who called the St. Matthews area their home.

Starting first as only a temporary wooden memorial to honor the fallen soldiers of World War II, it was erected in the triangle point park on Armistice Day in 1943. At that time, only eight names were listed on this monument. Then in 1946, the memorial was replaced by a stone monument bearing the names of 29 men. When the fountain was finally dedicated on July 19, 1967, the site became known as Fountain Point Park. Later the fountain was removed and another stone memorial with decorative pavers and beautiful landscaping was placed in the park.

Gallopalooza in St. Matthews

“Champion,” the City of St. Matthews Gallopalooza horse is a majestic, high-stepping standard bred, standing sentry at the frontage of Arthur K. Draut Park on Bowling Blvd.   This amazing monument is blanketed with a map of St. Matthews and piece details prominent street names and local markers.

Back in 2009, the City of St. Matthews joined in the metro area Gallopalooza – Sidewalk Derby to benefit the local Brightside program. Following the event, St. Matthews city officials selected one of the events life-size horse replicas and requested that local artist Cean Martine, a fine arts graduate of Indiana University, to design a sculpture that would uniquely depict the St. Matthews community.

Farmers Markets of St. Matthews

If you love to visit local farmers markets, you’re in luck. Bring the entire family and browse the goods of local farmers and vendors from St. Matthews. You can select from a variety of locally grown “fresh produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, honey, herbs, meat, cheese, flowers, craft products, and much more.” St. Matthews offers three options. St. Matthews Farmers Market, located at the Beargrass Christian Church, is open from May through October. Rainbow Blossom Farmer’s Market, located across from the Vogue Center, is open from June through October. Finally, “Farm to Table at Whole Foods Market, located in the Bluegrass Manor Center, is open from May through September.

What is the purpose of Farm Planning?

An estate plan is a framework for the disposition of your assets at the time of your death.  For farmers or ranchers, having an appropriate estate plan can serve an even bigger purpose.  When you pass on, it is crucial that a plan is put in place for a smooth transition of your farm or ranch, in terms of ownership and management.  Planning ahead can provide security for your family, even those who are not actively involved in the farm.  The purpose of farm planning is complex and very important to the survival of that legacy.

Why is a farm estate plan so important?

It has been predicted that one-fourth of the nation’s agricultural land will likely change hands in the next decade. When that happens, these valuable lands are vulnerable to being converted to other uses.  Estate planning is important to our nation, as it ensures that productive farms and ranches remain available for agriculture.  Farm estate planning is also important for those families who have every desire that their families stay in the farming industry and maintain the legacy that has been established.

Primary goals of a farm estate plan

A good estate plan for farms or ranches should accomplish at least these four goals: transferring ownership and management of the farm, land and other assets to a new operator; avoiding unnecessary transfer taxes, such as income, gift and estate tax; ensuring financial security and peace of mind for generations; and cultivating the next generation’s management capabilities.  Although a will is an important part of any estate plan, a will alone cannot guarantee the secure future of your family farm.

If you have questions regarding farm planning, or any other estate planning matters, contact the Cochrangersh Law Offices, P.S.C. for a consultation either online or by calling us at (502) 423-7023.
